Here is a list of things all new sites should have. Pass this list on to your web designer or use it to make sure he's doing his job.

Use descriptive title tags

All web pages should have a title and the title should be descriptive of the content on the page. The title should contain keywords and phrases that users are likely to search for to find the page.

Use alt tags

All images should be tagged with a descriptive alt tag. Images should be relevant to the content on the site.

Use heading tags

Use h1 and h2 for headings. If your text is one big block, break it up with headings. Not only does this show search engines what you consider to be important, it also helps users who do not want to read long paragraphs of text, but would rather skim.

Use descriptive anchor text

Don't say 'click here', instead tell me what I am going to get when I click there: 'Article on Standard SEO Pratices'.

Use a sitemap

A sitemap links to every page on your website. This will make it easier for the search engine to spider your entire site.

That about sums it up. If your web designer is not doing this, fire him! No really, if you notice that any of this stuff is not getting done, it's time to have a sitdown talk with your web designer.
